Dental Tribune Middle East and Africa interviewed Dr Khalid Mohammed Al-Kanani who is a prosthodontist and implantologists at Ain Al Khaleej Hospital, Al Ain. Khalid recently obtained the Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi Implantology Privilege and gives his perspective about the same.
Hello Dr Khalid, it is a pleasure to feature an experienced dentist such as yourself on the Dental Tribune Middle East and Africa Edition. First of all, tell us a little bit about yourself, what is your educational background and work experience, especially related to the UAE?
The pleasure is mine, I am pleased to be interviewed by your print and digital media publication. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in dentistry at the College of Dentistry at the University of Baghdad, Iraq in 1997, and my Master’s Degree in Prosthodontics in 2003. I have always been passionate about prosthetic and cosmetic dentistry, which is what I have been practicing for over 20 years.
I worked for over ten years in Iraq in my own private practice and I was a faculty member of the College of Dentistry in Baghdad University in the Prosthodontic Department. In 2007, I made the decision to move to the UAE and have ever since built a good relationship with my patients, giving priority to their care and interest.
You have graduated from the Clinical Implantology Certificate programme from the CAPP-Tipton Dental Academy, British Academy of Dental Implantology (BADI) and the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry (BARD) in UAE. Can you tell us what was your experience with the programme and what exactly it consisted of?
When I started working in UAE in 2007, I was doing only the prosthodontic and cosmetic part of the implant dentistry, as I was getting patient referred to me by other colleagues after doing the surgical part of the dental implantology.
This has given me a very good experience and made me familiar with many dental implant systems. However, I was feeling I needed to start doing my own cases from A to Z to give my patients the best results. I started attending lectures, trainings, and courses in UAE as well as internationally in order to improve my knowledge and experience in this field. My main objective was to be able to practice implantology following the DOH-Abu Dhabi rules and regulations.
It was an absolute privilege to register for the Clinical Implantology Certificate organised by CAPP. It follows a series of modules which consisted of live surgical patient treatment hands-on trainings, live surgery demonstrations, lectures, and seminars.
With this programme, I obtained the confidence to work the surgical part of implantology on patients. All participants were provided with adequate diagnostic tools to predict the success of the treatment under the close advice of the supervisor’s team. It was truly an honour to gain this experience from talented and highly qualified professionals such as Prof Göran Urde, Dr Maurizio Martini and other team members. They guided me through the entire process and they did their best to help me to improve my knowledge and experience.
After completing the Clinical Implantology Certificate, you also applied and successfully obtained from the Department of Health Abu Dhabi your Implantology Privilege. Could you share with our readers more details on how you achieved this privilege? What is your advice to the dentists in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain who would like to obtain an Implantology Privilege?
From my personal experience, after completing the course the delegates have solid knowledge in implantology. In addition, the DOH-Abu Dhabi requires the highest standards for dentists wishing to attain the Implantology Privilege, therefore it is a must to continue learning even after obtaining the Privilege.
Currently, you are working in Al Ain. Tell us more about the procedures which you perform?
In my daily practice, I focus on patients requiring regular care, cosmetic dental treatments, and of course, dental implants and restorations. I work closely with my colleagues from other specialities to ensure our patients receive the highest quality of care.
You have been working in UAE for a very long time. What is your experience as a dentist in one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan countries in the world? How is life in UAE in general?
Having spent the last 13 years of my life in UAE, particularly in Al Ain, I can say that my experience in all aspects has been extremely positive. I have been able to improve my skills from dental colleagues from many parts of the world, and experience which in fact is rather difficult to gain where I am originally from.
On a personal level, I have built wonderful friendships with expats from different parts of the world in addition to people from local communities and their fascinating culture. Emiratis are kind and open, showing respect to all regardless of their origin. I am grateful for the opportunity I have been given to live and thrive in this region.
Dr Khalid, what are your hobbies and what do you like doing in your private time?
Actually, dental practice is taking most of my time, when I am out of the office, my family is my first priority and they are what is the most important in my life. I love and enjoy spending time with them.
I also do like outdoor jogging whenever the weather and time permits it. I also enjoy travelling and exploring new places and cultures.
It was a real delight to have you with us on the Dental Tribune Middle East and Africa Edition. Thank you very much for this informative and interesting interview.
