Course Aims

The morning session will consist of a gold preps lecture and the afternoon session will be a practical covering gold preps, 3/4 crowns & 7/8 crowns.

Attending this course module will help delegate to:

  • Appreciate the exceptional longevity of gold preparations
  • Understand their aesthetic limitations, especially in the lower dentition
  • Describe their use in bridge abutments
  • Conceptualise the design features for gold preparations
  • Introduce the concepts of:  sharp internal line angles, the flare and the bevelled shoulder
  • Discuss the properties the occlusal offset furnishes to the preparation
  • Distinguish the clinical applications of the gold onlay and the 3/4 crown
  • Appreciate the conservation of tooth material offered by full gold and 7/8 crowns

Course Objectives

  • Appropriately select burs which produce sharp internal line angles and flared margins
  • Visualize a 60 axial inclination for all features of the preparation
  • Demonstrate grooves which are positioned correctly and have a line of draw
  • Produce an occlusal offset which follows the buccal finish line with the correct angulation
  • Demonstrate the preparation of a bevelled shoulder for gold onlays
  • Prepare restorations showing the correct planar reduction with ideal tooth removal
  • Demonstrate the correct placement of the functional cusp bevel
  • Reproduce the boxes to show both proximal and gingival flare
  • Appreciate the placement of the facial finishing bevel and the palatal supragingival chamfer
  • Respect the demand gold preparations place on the operator
