“It is amazing how efficient the 3D printing technique is. Normally, patients need to undergo various treatments, but with the use of the 3D digital workflow, this can be reduced significantly”, highlights the prominent scientist and dentist."
Prof. Dr. Daniel Wismeijer, Professor of Oral Implantology and Prosthetic Dentistry at the ACTA (Academic Centre for Dentistry of Amsterdam) will present the innovative NextDent 3D printed crown technology at the 13th edition of the CAD/CAM & Digital Dentistry Conference/Exhibition in Dubai on 04-05 May 2018, organized by CAPPmea, the leading Centre for Advanced Professional Practices in Dental Education in the Middle East region.
The Professor believes that the dental industry is at a tipping point, emphasizing the advantages of 3D printing for the improvement of the work efficiency, time savings, waste reduction and cost savings as some of the key points of the application of the NextDent 3D technology.
During his lecture in Dubai, his objectives are to present an observation of 3D printing technology allowing the volume production of complex small individualized parts, focussing on the manufacturing of dental CE certified and bio-compatible 3D printed materials, including Micro Filled Hybrid. The presentation will further underline the core transformation of the entire industry from a traditional craft to a high-tech 3D print environment.
The scientist will prove how efficient 3D printing technique is. He will introduce how the process starts with 3D scanning of the patient’s teeth thanks to specific dental software that creates and designs a 3D printable model; how the data is used by the dentist as a base of 3D design printing and for the perfect match of the future implant’s screw and how the crown is printed on a machine from TNO, a Dutch research institute, with NextDent’s MFH material.
Prof. Wismeijer will explain how 3D printing offers dental technicians the chance to work more predictably and with reduced errors. Moreover, the dentist is no longer constrained by the current cutting techniques, as far as the 3D printing technology enables the design of shapes, so necessary for the restoration, based on his knowledge and expertise. Additionally, the new technique is saving time by producing more workpieces in one run, compared to the current cutting technologies. The digital workflow is also “time-saving” for the patients and reduces the visits to a minimum.
About Prof. Dr. Daniel Wismeijer

After his graduation he joined the Department of Oral Function and worked in the special dental care and maxillofacial prosthodontics section. He received his PhD in 1996 defending his thesis on the topic of dental implants overdentures named “The Breda Implant Overdenture Study”. From 1985 till 2006 he worked at Amphia Hospital in the city of Breda, in the department of Oral Surgery and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. 27 years (since 1990) his general dental practice is a referral practice for Oral Implantology. 25 years he is a prominent member of the ITI (International Team for Implantology) and he has served as a member of the ITI Education Core Group for 8 years. In 2015 he became a Chairman of the ITI Education Committee. He has also served as a President of the Dutch Prosthodontic Association and the Dutch Association for Gnathology. In 2006 Prof. Wismeijer accepted the position of Professor of Oral Implantology and Prosthetic Dentistry at ACTA Amsterdam. He continues to combine it with his present referral practice. He is a Chairman and Head of the Section of Oral Implantology and Prosthetic Dentistry. Prof. Wismeijer’ research areas are focused on CAD/CAM treatment optimization, digital dentistry, treatment evaluation and workflow, implant surface and bone substitute optimization, peri-implantitis as well as on the evaluation of different implant based treatment modalities.
