SYDNEY, Australia: Dr Hugo Sachs has been announced as the new President of the Australian Dental Association (ADA), succeeding Dr Rick Olive, who had held the position since 2014. Sachs has been a member of the ADA Federal Council (essentially a board of directors) since 2004, holding positions as treasurer and vice president.
Sachs graduated from the University of Sydney in 1979 before receiving a master’s degree in dental surgery in 1993. He has been a member of the ADA New South Wales branch since 1999, serving as its president from 2003 to 2004. Since 2010, he has tutored at Charles Sturt University’s School of Dentistry and Health Sciences.
Sachs declared that he would continue the work of his predecessor and push for industry reform in the private health insurance industry. “Dr Olive has made a tremendous contribution to the dental profession and oral health in Australia during his term,” said Sachs.
“My priorities as President will be to continue to seek reform to the private health insurance industry so that patients get value for money, are able to get the quality, safe dental care that they need and that dentists are treated fairly by private health insurers.”
“I will also continue to advocate for the Commonwealth’s commitment to funded dental care for targeted populations as outlined in the Australian Dental Health Plan.”
The ADA is the primary national body for dental professionals in Australia, with the majority of dentists being members. The association has branches in each state and territory, and membership is voluntary. The change in presidency comes at an uncertain time for preventive dental health measures in Queensland, as legislative changes have made it permissible for the state’s local councils to reject the previously mandatory practice of water fluoridation.
