DAKAR, Senegal: From 25 to 27 October, the second International Dental Exhibition Africa (IDEA) was held in Dakar. The trade show, which was launched last year to promote growth of the dental industry in West Africa, was organised by the Italian Dental Industries Association (UNIDI) under the patronage of the Senegalese Minister of Health.

The opening ceremony of the event, which was held on 26 October at the King Fahd Palace Hotel and Conference Center, was attended by UNIDI Vice-President Dr Gianfranco Berrutti, the General Secretary of the Senegalese Ministry of Health, Prof. Ibraima Wone, and the Italian ambassador in Senegal, Francesco Paolo Venier.

During their speeches, they highlighted the relevance of the event, which brought more than 40 dental companies to Dakar to meet African dental professionals and distributors. In collaboration with the Italian Trade Commission, UNIDI invited numerous dealers from several African countries, giving them the opportunity to connect with international dental manufacturers.

The presence of international dental companies and the comprehensive scientific programme attracted a large number of dental professionals and persons in the industry. More than 1,500 importers, distributors, sales agents, dentists and dental technicians, hygienists and assistants who visited IDEA had the opportunity to buy consumables at competitive prices and to take part in the scientific sessions organised by the various national dental associations and in workshops by exhibiting companies.

After two years in Senegal, next year’s IDEA will take place at the ECA Conference Center in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia from 26 to 28 September 2017. The event, to be supported by the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, will be organised in partnership with the East and Southern Africa Division of the International Association for Dental Research and the Ethiopian Association for Dental Research. The event will be held in conjunction with the General Session and Exhibition of the Africa and Middle East Region and the 31st Annual Meeting of the East and Southern Africa Division.
