JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia: Dr Khaled Abouseada worked with five different types of aligner systems for about ten years before deciding on eCligner. Using 3-D design and manufacturing technology, the transparent and removable orthodontic appliance allows for individual treatment for a variety of clinical indications. In an upcoming free Dental Tribune Study Club webinar, the experienced orthodontist will discuss the advantages of 3-D digitally fabricated clear aligners for orthodontic treatment.
The eCligner system can be used for the correction of a wide range of malocclusions. Using 3-D CAD/CAM technology, just one dental impression or scan is needed to produce the complete set of aligners. The treatment process is customised to the needs and objectives of every patient and is divided into several steps. As part of each phase of treatment, three aligners of different thicknesses are worn in weekly intervals. This offers an essential advantage of eCligner compared with other products to avoid loss of aligner elasticity and decrease the applied force. Using varying thicknesses, 0.5 mm (soft), 0.62 mm (medium) and 0.75 mm (hard), has been found to produce more biologically accepted effects on the surrounding dental tissue. As confirmed by clinical studies, the system allows for up to 0.8 mm of movement in one step (compared with 0.25 mm in two weeks with other aligner systems), which results in reduced treatment time. Inimitable methodology allows for treatment without any additional attachments to the teeth, unlike other brands. Furthermore, only eCligner can be used in mixed dentition and for skeletal correction.
The system’s unique software follows basic orthodontic principles for set-up, leading to fewer side-effects and less need for refinement of results at the end of treatment. Lateral cephalometric tracing with different methods of analysis is available, as well as superimposition of digital models, facial profile photographs and lateral cephalometric radiographs. Smile arch and aesthetic guidelines are taken into consideration during set-up design. Through 3-D facial scanning and simulation, the expected final soft-tissue results can be shown to the patient. The acrylic models for each step of the treatment give dentists further control in case of lost or broken aligners. Furthermore, the software allows for comparison of virtual and actual results and offers easy trouble-shooting at any stage of treatment.
