CAPE TOWN, South Africa: Two weeks ago, at its general session, the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) honoured Prof. Mark Bartold with the 2014 IADR/Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine. Bartold was selected for the award owing to his remarkable achievements in clinical research in implant and regenerative dentistry.

Bartold is Professor of Periodontics and the Director of the Colgate Australian Clinical Dental Research Centre at the University of Adelaide. He has authored more than 230 scientific articles, including studies on the use of periodontal stem cells and the fabrication of bioactive scaffolds for periodontal regeneration. In addition to his research activities, Bartold currently serves as President of the International Academy of Periodontology. He is also a member of the editorial boards of eight international journals.

The award, worth US$5,000, was initiated in 2010 to recognise significant contributions in basic and/or clinical research in regenerative periodontal medicine. It is sponsored by global dental manufacturer Straumann and administered by the IADR’s Periodontal Research Group, a forum for IADR members active in periodontal research that aims to improve periodontal health through encouraging research activities.

The IADR general session was held from 25 to 28 June in Cape Town.
