Why attend this course?

Digital Dentistry has now becoming an essential part of diagnosis and treatment planning in the dental practice. The digital workflow can improve practice efficiency and predictability regardless of the level of integration, from digital photography to digital hardware and software.

What is the aim of the course?

This 2 day intensive course will give you a deep understanding on the current hardware and software that is available as will as give you the skills to use these technologies to maximise your potential in practice.

What will I learn?

Digital technologies will give you the ability to work more efficiently and effectively in practice whilst producing a higher calibre of work.
The days will be divided, with each morning and afternoon session providing lectures on theory before delegates receive hands on training using these technologies.

You will be introduced to the use of intra-oral scanners, milling machines, 3D Printers and will learn how to:

  • Evaluate the history of Digital Dentistry
  • Evaluate the role of the digital workflow in dentistry
  • Understand the terminology that will give delegates a deep understanding which is crucial to knowing how to use the software and hardware to their full potential
  • Understand the terms closed and open systems will be discussed and how each scanner plays their part in possible workflows in orthodontics, implants and prosthodontics
  • Cover Digital Photography Principles, Hardware and Storage as digital photography will help you treatment plan your patients better, reflect on your cases as well as document your work to a high standard
  • Training with hands on techniques to take predictable high quality shots to capture patient photographs.

Speakers

The academic teaching will be delivered by Dr Adam Nulty, an expert clinician in digital dentistry & CBCT. David Claridge will also be present to give the delegates an understanding of “Scanomics”, the decision making process and economics of purchasing digital equipment such as intra oral scanners.

Course Structure

The course will be delivered in a 2 day mixed lecture and hands on training approach.

Agenda Day 1

09:30 - 10:30 Lecture - Intro to Digital History
This first lecture will cover the history of Digital Dentistry and how the technologies we have now have evolved.
10:30 - 11:15 Lecture Terminology
Understanding the terminologies used in Digital Dentistry is crucial to understanding how to use the software and hardware to their full potential.
11:15 -11:30 Coffee Break
11:30 - 12:00 Lecture - Scanners and 3D Printers
In this lecture the range of scanners and 3D printers on the market currently will be discussed, along with their relative advantages and disadvantage. The terms closed and open systems will be discussed and how each scanner plays their part in possible workflows in orthodontics, implants and prosthodontics.
12:00 - 13:00 Hands-on scanning
In this hands on session we will use the IDDA Scan Training models to learn how best to use digital intra oral scanners to capture impressions for restorations and for full mouth scenarios such as orthodontics with Carestream CS 3600 Scanners.
13:00 - 14:00 Lunch
14:00 - 15:00 Scanomics by David Claridge!
David Claridge will discuss the Return On Investment of purchasing digital equipment and what advantages these technologies can have in practice.
15:00 - 16:00 Photography Principles, Hardware and Storage
16:00 - 18:00 Hands On Photography
The rest of the afternoon will be dedicated to Digital Photography. Understanding what we use in practice and hands on techniques to take predictable high quality shots to capture patient photographs.

Agenda Day 2

09:00 - 10:15 Radiography
The first lecture of the second day will be dedicated to understanding 3D CBCT Radiography
10:15 - 11:15 3D Printing
The second day will then progress to look at using 3D printers in practice. Surgical Guides, Cosmetic templates, Prosthetic drill guides and more.
11:15 - 11:30 Coffee Break
11:30 - 12:00 Integration with smile design
12:00 - 13:00 Hands on with Meshmixer and simple mockups
The last part of the morning will look at integrating what we have learned so far and using Meshmixer, a free CAD software in a hands on session to create simple yet aesthetic mockups.
13:00 - 14:00 Lunch
14:00 - 15:00 CAD Software and examples
15:00 - 15:30 CAM Manufacture
15:30 - 16:00 CAM Materials
16:00 - 18:00 Hands On with CAM Materials, Surface texture and glazing.
The final part of the course will help delegates to understand what software can be used to design restorations, how they can be milled and once they are milled how they are finished ready for fit. The final hands on activity will teach delegates surface texture techniques and simple staining and glazing techniques to create beautiful final restorations.
