AL-AIN, UAE: According to the World Health Organization, 60 to 90 per cent of schoolchildren worldwide have dental cavities. Tooth decay, which can have a significant impact on the general health and development of children, is also an area of concern in the United Arab Emirates. A recently published study has shown a high prevalence of decayed and filled primary teeth due to dental caries in children in the region.

KIGALI, Rwanda: This week, Dental Recycling International (DRI) announced that it has partnered with the Rwanda Dental Association. DRI provides education on and technology for dental waste recycling throughout the world, and will help the association to reduce the amount of mercury from dental amalgam entering the local environment.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania: As reported by Daily News, a Tanzanian online newspaper, the East Africa Dental Amalgam Phase-down Project has been successfully implemented in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Among other objectives, the project will investigate supply and trade patterns, and encourage switching to alternatives to dental amalgam in the three countries.
